Top Car Shipping Tips

Transporting your car can feel daunting, but with the right preparation, it doesn’t have to be. By taking the necessary steps to ensure your vehicle is ready for the journey, you can avoid common pitfalls and have peace of mind knowing your car is in good hands. Below, you’ll find our comprehensive list of car transport tips to help you prepare your car for shipping and ensure a smooth transport process.

Wash Your Vehicle

The first step in preparing your vehicle for transport is to wash the exterior thoroughly. When your car is clean, it makes it easier to spot existing damage, such as scratches, dents, or paint chips. This is a critical step because you and the transport driver will conduct an inspection before and after shipping to ensure your high-end car arrives in the same condition it was shipped in. Dirt and grime can hide imperfections, so take the time to wash your car properly.

Take Pictures of Your Vehicle

Document your vehicle’s condition by taking clear, high-resolution photos from multiple angles. Make sure to capture close-ups of any existing damage. This visual record serves as evidence in case of disputes regarding new damage during transport.

Take a Photo of the Odometer

Take a photo of your vehicle’s odometer before handing it over to the transport company. This ensures you have a record of the mileage, confirming that the car was not driven excessively during transit.

Clean the Interior of Your Vehicle

Empty your vehicle’s interior of all loose items, including coins, electronics, and personal belongings. Unsecured objects can damage the interior during transit. Additionally, remove any items that might shift and create noise or distractions for the driver.

Secure or Remove Accessories

Remove or secure any external accessories such as bike racks, antennas, and roof racks. These items could be damaged or cause damage to other vehicles during transport. Stow them safely to avoid complications.

Check the Radiator, Battery, and Tires

Make sure your car’s radiator and battery are in good working order. The radiator should be filled with antifreeze, and the battery in a standard vehicle should be fully charged. If you’re shipping an electric vehicle (EV) the battery charge level should be between 45% and 60%. Check your tire pressure and inflate or deflate as necessary, according to your vehicle’s specifications. Properly inflated tires prevent damage during loading and unloading.

Check for Fluid Leaks

Inspect your vehicle for any fluid leaks well in advance of the transport date. Leaking fluids can pose a hazard to the transport truck and other vehicles. If you find a leak, have it repaired before the shipping date to ensure your car is accepted for transport.

Address Engine and Mechanical Problems

If your vehicle has any mechanical or engine issues, notify the transport company ahead of time. For safety and efficiency, your car should be in working condition unless you’ve arranged for it to be transported as a non-operational vehicle. Fix any problems that could complicate loading and unloading.

Leave the Gas 1/8 to 1/4 Full

Keep your gas tank between one-eight and one-quarter full. This ensures there’s enough fuel for the car to be driven on and off the transporter but minimizes weight to reduce shipping costs.

Disable Alarms

Disable your car’s alarm system before shipping to avoid unnecessary complications. An active alarm can go off during transit, causing distractions and delays. Double-check this step to ensure a smooth process.

Deactivate or Remove Toll Tags

Remove or deactivate toll tags and transponders from your vehicle. Leaving these in place can result in unexpected charges while your car is being transported. Store them securely until your car is delivered.

Have Keys Ready

Provide the transport company with a full set of keys, including ignition, trunk, and any other necessary keys. Make sure to keep a spare set for yourself in case of emergency.

Have Insurance on Your Vehicle

Verify that your vehicle’s insurance is up to date and check the policy coverage for transport-related incidents. Most reputable shipping companies also offer insurance, but having your own coverage adds an extra layer of protection.

Shipping Personal Belongings

When you ship your car with Passport Transport, personal belongings inside the vehicle are not insured, so we recommend you don’t leave anything inside your car.

Yes, you should prepare your vehicle for shipping to ensure a smooth and secure transport process. Passport Transport handles vehicles with the utmost care, but following these basic guidelines will help protect your car during transit:

  • Do not fill the gas tank. Keep only about 1/4 tank of gas, which is sufficient for loading and unloading.
  • Check antifreeze levels. If your car is being shipped from a warm to a cold climate, ensure it has enough antifreeze to prevent freezing in colder temperatures.
  • Secure loose items. Avoid storing personal belongings in the car, but if there are any loose items, secure them properly to prevent damage. Note that Passport Transport is not responsible for damages caused by unsecured items.
  • Disable alarm systems. Turn off all alarms, and let the team know if an alarm is installed. Provide instructions for deactivating it if necessary.
  • Check tire pressure. Inflate tires to the recommended pressure level for safe loading and unloading.

By following these steps, you’ll help ensure your vehicle is ready for safe and efficient shipping.
